Hello!

I am new to this forum and registered because I have a few questions regarding my goal of assembling a set of English (later also UK) gold coins. My collection currently consists of 100% German and Austrian coins, yet I have become interested greatly in the history of Britain through various university courses.

I am far from being knowledgeable about the entire history and especially numismatic history of the british isles and am just now trying to start my collection by aquiring literature like a catalog and other helpful books from the start of gold coins (excluding the celts) up to present day on the british isles.

It would be great if someone recommended me some books or even videos and some general advice on how to start this collection in the best way possible.

Best regards

Probably your best bet is to start with the Spink yearbook for pre-decimal coins. It will include all the silver and bronze as well as the gold, but it also includes a potted history of each monarch and their coinage.

If you are leaving out the Celtic coinage it will be sparse pickings in the early days. There are quite a few tiny early Saxon coins, but very few named coins in the later Saxon era. Early Norman has no gold, so the serious sequence starts with Edward III around 1344. Thereafter it gets steadily easier as the centuries go by.

This is the book I suggest as a starting point: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Coins-Engl.../1912667959/
