Hi, I was going through my late parents coins last night and found a coin in case and when I opened it I discovered it is a 1953 5 shilling. I started doing some research on them and found out there are several varieties of them. However I couldn't find any decent pictures to distinguish them and was wondering if anyone could please tell me what type mine is.

You've got the standard version that was issued in small square plastic boxes. There was also a proof version with a highly polished surface issued only in Proof Sets. Records show there were also 2 matte Proofs, which I believe were struck especially so the new coins could be photographed, plus 30 VIP proofs which have a highly polished field and frosted relief.

I am not aware of any major varieties of the standard coin - the catalogues I own don't list any, but there may be specialist catalogies listing minor varieties.

As with almost all coins with incuse edge lettering, the edge lettering can be either way up and in any position with reference to the obverse and reverse designs. This is not considered a significant variety by most collectors.

Thank you NumisRob and Coinfrog very much appreciated. That is what I thought it was but just wanted it confirmed before I catalog it.
