I dug this 1797 large cent in Portsmouth, Virginia. Currently, the old farm site is now all homes. Back in the late 1980s, I found a ton of great pieces on this site. Mostly early militaria. I realize the coin is now a relic, but it's still a cool piece. Any ideas on what the counterstamp could be? She's a rough one. Thanks for your help.

Given the large font size of these stampings, I'd guess that the stamper was an early, pre Civil War, blacksmith or toolmaker. I'm not seeing a sufficiently decipherable stamping here to make an attribution. Offhand, it appears to me that a partial stamping appears to have been twice-hammered. This suggests to me that whoever applied these stampings was simply testing their stamp on a pocket coin.

I've a number of dug c/s's in my collection, the great majority of which have been attributed. Maverick c/s's like this one, lacking any specific history, have very little value, of course. Musing about suspected origins is fun though ....
