Over the last few weeks I've been sorting out a small coin collection my late grandfather had left me. The coins were not in proper cases or folders. And most all were exposed to the elements of time. I am a bit new to the Coin World. I wanted to get these coins in order to possibly pass down to my children. Anyway, to the point. As I was wiping down down some of the more dirty coins, the image of a second eye on a 1944 S Jefferson nickel caught my attention. Am I nuts? Or is this a normal thing that happens? Thanks guys. I appreciate any feedback.. by the way, it looks like most of these coins were collected within their decade and sealed up for the last 70 or so years.

Please stop wiping down your coins. Do Not Clean Them.

I do understand the importance of not damaging a potentially rare coin. However, this coin along with a few others were corroded and covered with sludge to the point I could not even identify what coin they were. All coins that are at least identifiable are at at most given a quick dip in acetone and cared for appropriately. I do understand the concern. Thank you

Definitely an interesting find!

A doubled eye is known to happen on War Nickels. I did not find any for 1945, but below is a link to a 1943-P doubled eye for comparison. It appears quite similar.

Also worth noting, when a die clash occurs, the base of Monticello emerges almost straight through the eye. The mint can polish away the die clash remnants on the fields, but they can't do much for the bust because heavy polishing would destroy the facial features. So that is another possible explanation.

Thank you so much for the info. I have a lot more unique looking coins. Many of them a bit tarnished, but look as if they were just struck. Not sure if my grandfather even knew what he had.

That could be a die clash.
But if you need to get oils and gunk off your coin, use an Acetone soak over night then an air dry afterwards First.

Thanks everybody. And big thanks to you Dearborn. I have alot of very old coins and been trying to research everything I can with all this. Any input and even some critique will help me out. I will be posting a lot of coins and a lot questions. I believe I have all the years of every wheat coin, many of each. And lot that appear to have flaws or errors. Thanks again.
