OK, so it is becoming increasingly apparent that I need to invest in a better camera, because I can't get a picture of this. But...

I just picked up a roll of Van Buren dollars, and the very first one out of the package shows ghosting around all the letters on the obverse. As do several others.

It might also be the traces of Mechanical Doubling, but they all go inward toward the center-- ie the trails on "martin van buren" go down, and the trails on "8th president" and the date the trails go up.. which wouldn't seem to be possible for Mechanical Doubling.

So I did a search, both here and google, and haven't seen any others like it, but I did find traildies.com, and that looks pretty similar but nothing on the van buren dollar. So now I'm wondering what the next step is. I'm not new to collecting by any means but I'm definitely new to error collecting and have never found the "first" of anything. I've also yet to have anthing "worth" enough to grade... f this really is something, I'd like to get it graded if for nothing else than to be the first one to do so.

So, how does one go about having an "error" coin graded?

thanks for reading all this, and sorry about no pics.

Incognito Silver Guy

The person that runs the site you visited, traildies.com, is BJ Neff and he is pretty much the leading expert on them and has done more research on the subject than anyone. He has been an occasional poster here but I have not seen him post in a while. This field of study is still relatively new and the TPGs are not attributing them yet. Your best bet would be to contact BJ and he could attribute it for you. I see one MVB listing for 2008P but it does not sound like what you are describing so it may be a new discovery.

In regards to your camera, are you using the macro setting(usually a flower icon) and do you have a tripod? If your camera is less than 6 or so years old, you should be able to get a decent pic. A scanner could also work too.

Yeah, unfortunately I would have to see good images of the coin to tell much of anything. Bummer.

My camera is a good 10+ years old, and it's not in the budget to replace it at this point. Especially not for something "frivolous" (in my wife's opinion) such as this. I figured a picture would be required for a positive ID, but it's encouraging that (so far) no one else has heard of this yet.

I'll see about scanning it at work (which is an excellent idea!) or borrowing someone's camera.

Thank you, I really appreciate the replies and the depth of knowledge I see in other posts.

OK, so- I borrowed my mother's camera... still not as nice as I'd like, but you can get an idea. Have a look here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/foyo_p...17020912930/

I tried to get the best pics I could, but I am not a photographer by any means.

I did notice when looking at the photos that in one the "T" looks doubled... in looking closer & the coin itself, and getting the light just right, it looks like all the lettering is indeed doubled, slightly offset to the right and toward the center of the coin.

I appreciate any opinions and advice on what this.

Not a bad image for a beginner. I like the 4th one. It doesn't show what w need to see, but there is something most images are missing. Light and shadows. Not too much light and the right amount of shadow.

I edited it a little.
