TL;DR

Could anyone tell me what they think this coin is worth, your best estimate at what it could be graded at (worst case / best case and if it's worth me getting it graded and any other insight, advice, or opinions.

Hello, my names Dylan I've always been interested in coins and numismatic but I'm still a noobie and I wouldn't consider myself very educated in the space. I'm here looking for some of your opinions and advice

I was recently given this coin from my Dad, he had it in a pouch with a bunch of other very common sovereign gold coins. :(

As I was researching all of them, this one stuck out as quite rare, only 128000 were minted compared to the other years which had a mintage of 500k-1m+

I've seen past sales on heritage auction of this coin selling for a lot of money, I've found myself constantly comparing the images I took of my coin to the images of the coins they have on there. I thought my coin looked great compared to the other coins but when I took an image without flash and a better camera I was quite disappointed as there is a great amount of toning in the coin.

I was really hoping if I got this graded it would be possibly above ms62 but now I'm starting to think I'm being a little optimistic.

Could anyone tell me what they think this coin is worth, your best estimate at what it could be graded at (worst case / best case and if it's worth me getting it graded and any other insight, advice, or opinions.

Also, from the little I research about the topic, I know cleaning the coin in anyway is a NO, but is there anything I can do to clean the dark toning or is the deal sealed and it is what it is since anything else would further devalue the coin?

Your coin appears to be AU-55 "details" as it looks cleaned. It is a slightly better date and your best bet on values is search ebay for current and sold listings.

@IndianGoldEagle

It hasn't been cleaned as far as I know, I believe my dad just had it in an envelope for a few decades haha. It still has the cart wheel luster when I move it around. Does this change anything?

Also, just out of curiosity, what makes you think it has been cleaned?

Hairline marks both sides in the fields caused by wiping. The first two photos show the fields bright and shinny while the protected areas in the lettering are frosty and dull.

I could be wear? I ask that because the lines in the flat fields more exposed to wear look random.

It's never been cleaned according to my dad, but who knows, its a very old coin he bought from his neighbor in India decades ago.

Anyways, I'm going to send it in for a grading to PCGS or NGC, do y'all have any opinion about which one I should send it to?

I was going to choose NGC

You're new to things... don't try to touch to clean, improve, etc. You don't know what you're doing yet, almost certainly you'll only hurt it.

PCGS vs. NGC... both solid, NGC a bit more liberal.

Does look possibly lightly wiped, fields a bit bright... but the points above about hairlines... eh, not egregious. Part of it is those flash photos, which are quite unflattering to the surfaces. Additionally, plenty of luster on the eagle side.

It probably comes back AU detail, cleaned. It's "AU+", but on "Details" pieces, it's either AU or UNC with no further breakdown at either service (ANACS does). Maybe, possibly, if the surfaces are less bright in hand... it worms its way into an NGC AU55, straight grade.

There aren't a heck of a lot of these rarer Alexander III gold pieces on ebay vs. the common later Nicholas II types. Best to check Heritage and European auction house results. It's a higher 3-figure piece.

Certainly a better piece to stumble on.
