That article is misleading. There are 3 more cents that are going to be minted this year, and they are comparing to full years in the past. The total mintage for 2009 is what will matter.
I also disagree on blaming the recession for the banks not having them. The banks aren't buying them because they have enough cents already.

Quote: The total mintage for 2009 is what will matter. I have to disagree. They are different designs, so different varieties. Think about it this way, would you include the 1909-S VDB mintage with the rest of the 1909-S cents? Granted, yes, the total cents produced this year should be on par with the totals of recent years. However, this year a collector needs at least four cents (per mint) to complete his set, not the usual one; so you might as well divide the total by four when calculating relative scarcity.

Quote: I have to disagree As soon as I hit "Post New Reply" I knew that sentence of mine would become a target. I just don't agree that the coin can be called "scarce" based on comparing mintage figures for this one coin . In previous years, the *vast* majority of coins went out to circulate. It seems a great percentage of these coins are being hoarded/collected. If anything, in a few years there will be more uncirculated 2009 cents any previous year. By a mile. Not scarce at all.

Quote: HOLLYWOOD: "Which one do you like?" I like the "LP13" design, because the shield was used on coins that were made for circulation while Lincoln was president! The 2010 Cent reverse is supposed to be "emblematic of President Lincoln's preservation of the United States of America as a single and united country", so what could be better to represent this than the symbol of the shield that was on almost all U.S. coins minted during the time that Mr. Lincoln ensured the Union's preservation? Indian Head cent 1860-1909 = Shield on top of wreath on reverse Two-Cent Piece 1864-1873 = Large Shield in center of reverse Silver Three-Cent Piece 1851-1873 = Shield inside star on reverse Seated Liberty 5¢ to $1 coins (1860's and other years) = Shield held by Liberty's right hand on obverse Liberty Head Eagle Gold $2.50 to $20.00 coins (1860's and other years, excludes $3 coin) = Shield on Eagle on reverse. Also, the " Shield nickel" 5¢ coin debuted in 1866, the year after Lincoln died. The "LP-17" design is also reminiscent of older coinage, and the Eagle's position is nicely done.

I like the LP 13 cent with the shield, and the LP 17 with the eagle. They remind me of the old cents, the flying eagle, and the indian.

Just watch, they will probably pick the one that most collectors dislike. I think this happens to much in the modern coinage.

Politicians and their committee's get to be the "deciders" !.... But they should take some "polls" from Coin Forums.......hmmmm......can ya think of any forums.... Quote:On April 16 the Fine Arts Commission will meet as this issue of Numismatic News goes to press. It was established in 1910 and it is one of two public bodies that evaluate potential U.S. coin designs and then submit their recommendations to the Treasury secretary. We need these peoples addresses and phone numbers and emails.......

I like the LP 13 and 17. Either one of those would be fine with me.

Quote: I just don't agree that the coin can be called "scarce" based on comparing mintage figures for this one coin . I agree. Although the mintage of each type might be one quarter what we are used to, there are still more than enough to go around. I was using the term scarcity as a unit of measure. Quote: If anything, in a few years there will be more uncirculated 2009 cents any previous year. By a mile. Not scarce at all. Absolutely! I feel that in the long term, the 2009 cent will have a lot more high-grade survivors than any other Zincoln. Think 1931-S versus the 1914-D. Quote: I like the "LP13" design, because the shield was used on coins that circulated while Lincoln was president! That was my favourite as well; the LP17 (eagle) being my second choice.
