I've been watching sales of $20 gold liberty proof like coins for several months on ebay, Great Collections, Heritage Auctions. I decided to buy one, a 1904 PCGS MS63 PL on ebay, the seller accepted my offer. I looked at a few MS64 PL but they cost a lot more and I didn't want to spend that much. 1904 is the most common year of the type and most common of the PL. PL are scarce though. If I added correctly PCGS and NGC together have a population of only about 1,162 1904 PL in all grades. It sure makes a big difference how the coin looks using various lighting and angles. My camera isn't bad at showing close up details, but when I make a group of pics together and downsize it for CCF the details get lost. I'm happy I got the coin, even the wife likes it LOL. I wondered recently if there were any PL St. Gaudens. So far as I can tell there aren't. MS St Gaudens can have incredible luster aka cartwheel. But they aren't reflective the way proofs are. Luster cancels out reflection, which requires die polishing.
If I ever get a PL Liberty Head it will be a San Francisco.

@thq, PCGS doesn't show any proof-like Saints in their pop report, while NGC reports 2 (both dated 1922).
