lenny, You have too many different coins in one thread,I am confused. The 1998's the left one just looks toned. The next two photos must be 1982? Your question please. The following photo,1987...question? The last three photos ? John1

Please separate these coins - you have full coin images on 2 different 1998, but closeups of a 1982 and another of 1987. What point are you trying to make with the close up images?

In mid-year 1982, the composition of the cent shifted from a copper-zinc alloy (weight 3.11g) to copper-plated zinc (weight 2.5g).
If the plating bath isn't changed frequently enough, the solution gets zinc poisoning and will have a brassier coloration.
It's just a meaningless variation in the manufacturing process.
You certainly could brass plate a cent, but why would you?

I realize these coins are damaged, the difference in the surface finish compared to hundreds of other same year coins on my table made me think they were an error planchet. I see how the contaminated bath makes them brass and it is common. However, if I see the link John gave us correctly, these coins are an error..?

lenny, That 1987 is not an error,it is PMD/circulation wear. John1
