Well Said DOCC,

I too Appreciate Your Choice of Words, 100% Agreed, Once thought about.

The Cigarette smoke was an At the Time, Natural Toning from the Intentional Usage of the Smoke.

I think I asked this before (but not about the same coin) about artificially vs. intentionally toned.

Great project jack - I'm indifferent to toning (like some, dislike some) but I'd throw your experiment into the like bucket.

Now, did you submit them and get busted by the tone police? Be an interesting 'test' case. Especially if they didn't detail the coin and then you fessed up.
I swing a metal detector and have a knack for finding dirty old coins.

Nicely toned slabbed coins such as pictured should also be stored in a close fitting cliplock plastic bag to maintain the toning as is, over the long term.

I suspect the already artificially? toned coin may have been submitted for grading and slabbed for preservation.

As far as toning is concerned,
perhaps PCGS saw it as a borderline case of deciding between artificial and natural.
Others may have a different opinion.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

? How much does beautiful artificial toning detract from value?

Personally, such beautiful toning, be it artificial or natural, makes zero difference to me as far as value is concerned,
because such toning is unstable in the long term.
