We had this topic going on about the price of the key ASEs. The one comment was last made about finding a 10th Anniversary Set that hasn't been cleaned, and my mind was like "WHO in their right mind would clean a 10th Anniversary Set!?". Then it made me wonder if their have ever been any toned 1995Ws. So I googled it up and found one. Man I'm not a fan of toned ASEs. This one would be an exception, is it ever pretty. . I Have seen a Few RAW examples, Not as This Though. Collecting " Toned " coins has its collectors, I personally Love Naturally Toned Silver Based Coins. This 1995-W Proof American Silver Eagle while looking Sweet, Nicely Struck, Circular Obv/Rev Rainbow Tones, I Believe people would be Interested in This Key to the Series in ANY condition, Some might enjoy the Label, being a PR-68 DCAM- that would be of Strong Interest in My opinion to a Select Collector. However, I think This ASE is NOT a Naturally Toned Example, JMO. Stunningly Shown Too....... Edit: Is this selling for $24,999.99 ?

That's a highly respected grader, would they allow that to be slabbed or is it possible that's why it has a low grade? I thought the good graders would just send it back if it's artificial or modified?

I have Seen Many, Many " subjective " Opinions/Grades when it comes to grading From the Third Party Grading company's. I am Sure you Too have seen More Mislabeled, More Less than Perfect Grades given to Coins. If your name was say Norweb, or Elisaberg, You Could get a Very Sweet Label Being the Graders would Gladly accommodate You. But I am talking about the Every Day Collector sending in Their Coins for a Grade, Far Too many Coins are Not labeled for what they Actually Grade....I am Sure PCGS has the slabs, to Prove it Too.. .The OP's posted Coin is perfect Discussion Example, Gilly what do You believe the slab shown was colored by, Nature, Dipping, Nicotine Exposure, Other Chemical means, or Artificial Toning, ? Great Topic .....

I do like the appearance. It's nothing I have to have for sure, I have a nice 1995 set and I don't have any other toned coins except what's in my junk silver stack. I have no idea if it's natural, if it's a created tone,I have no idea how they did it, it's not my thing. The only other comment, is if someone toned it, who in their right mind would do that to a 1995W? Might as well send it out to be painted, too!

Apparently " Toned " 1995-W ASE's are Out There, Just what is Out There? People collect what they will because they are Taken by a Design or Theme I Too am Drawn to Older coinage, Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars. Silver Dollars have a Very Unique way of " toning ", Environmental Conditions, Storage Temperatures, Chemically Dipped or Treated, Or Naturally. Research a Coins Design, Content, Mintage, and Authenticity!!!! The American Silver Eagles Series is Another Very Unique Silver Coin People have Taken to having their coins Toned !!! Toning has become Something of an Attraction, Much-Like a Sub-Set of Sorts, People are drawn into the Rainbow-Like Monster Multi-Colored Hues Silver takes on with age I Too Love Some Sweet, Naturally Toned over time Coins " . Then there is Another Toning, Not Natural " Artificial Toning ", With Every single coin minted, There are People who have Another interest other than Natural, That Difference is difficult to Discern, Hard to Know the different finishes , Toning, Naturally or Artificially !!!!!!!! People frequent Coin B&M Shops to Cherry pick coins, I have found a Very Good Education in Toning. My favorite Shop Coin Dealer was Always taken in Freah, Never ending Coins, He would share His Knowledge and Experiences. One such story was about Artificially Toning Silver coins with Cigarette Expelled Smoke, He said people would Go Crazy for a Sweet Naturally Toned Silver Morgan dollar? He would place the coins they wanted toned up High in the Room where He was a Smoker, Left the coins up high in the room for Weeks and Weeks, The Results were Very Remarkable, Full Rainbow colored Monster Hues Bursting from the Coins. Artificially Toned coins are Hard to Tell from Naturally Time Toned Examples. My Point Here is, an Education on This Topic is Highly Recommended, If Your Seeking Naturally Toned Coins, Know Exactly what Your Attracted to, ................

First look screams artificial toning. Way too uniform. But what is the true definition of artificial toning?
Where one 'red lines' the crossover between artificial and natural is subject to debate. IE: I can throw a brilliant UNC silver coin in an older, sulfur-laden envelope and place it on the window sill, or under a heat lamp for a month. Is that artificial or natural? I'd argue it is completely natural albeit purposely executed. Gassing is only slightly more complicated but still, essentially a natural process.
Bottom line - IMHO - for the most part, all toning is a natural process. Intentions at the outset is where the 'red line' is and I don't see how TPGs can ever accurately set requirements on that. I could argue that the US Mint had the intention of toning Morgans when they placed them in the mint bags years ago. I know it is not true but you would have a heck of a time trying to prove me wrong.
A start might be getting rid of the term 'artificially toned' and labeling it as 'intentionally toned'.
