Evening,

I have this lovely 1889 penny which is graded by CGS in the UK. I've submitted CGS graded coins to NGC for grading before and they have come back several grades lower than the equivalent. What do you think this would grade as at NGC? Virtually full colour and lustre. I may keep it as it is.

There's some weakness in the hair above the eye and but for that, I would have thought this was a BU/MS63 Red coin.

So I would go for GEF/AU58 with full lustre.

Looking at the coin in hand, might induce me to reduce the obverse to EF.

In the past, I have seen many coins that NGC graded higher than I would have graded them.

I am guessing it was CGS-78-80? so it should crossover @ MS63RB all day. Extremely difficult to get a RED designation on bronze coins. All Victorian Pennies are for the most part weak strikes

Is this a scan? The "lustre" as you guys say (which we refer to as Red color, reserving luster strictly for the cartwheeling effect) is a bit dull in the photo - but guessing more vibrant in hand?

It should grade decently MS. RD vs RB depends on what it looks like in hand (i.e., how vibrant). Those spots frankly do distract some though and may tip the scale to RB.

Met the CGS chap at a show in Philadelphia maybe, hmmm, 6, 7 years ago? Interesting guy... close talker. Have I read that they are sort of dormant now?

CGS graded it 85, and the images don't do it justice really. I have yet to get a good photo of a coin that I'm happy with.

Having talked to a dealer the other day, he was also of the opinion that CGS were a bit over zealous with their numbers. I recently sent in an 85 graded coin and it came back as PF63
