Hello forum, my first post. I found this unusual quarter in the reject bin of a Coin Star counting machine. The coin may have "second rock" error but I'm not sure. The bizarre thing is that it shows no sign of cladding. I've been closely checking change since 1965 and have never seen this before. It weighs 5.7 grams. Could this be a planchet of some sort? Counterfeit?

It was plated after it left the mint, silver or platinum plated. I cannot help you with the rock.

Point to the extra rock so we can help you. The coin looks plated from your picture of rim.

Thanks for the circle. It looks like a die chip.

An internet search turned up no other examples of a "second rock". Is this a term you made up?

yes, a die chip - fairly common. and your coin has been plated - another common thing that was done to these State Quarters.

I saw the second rock in a YouTube video describing errors. What was the point of plating the thing? Seems not worth the effort.

Don't believe everything you see on the tube.
The reason they get plated is so grandparents will buy them for their grand kids from tv shows like QVC and HSN etc..

Thanks for all of the kindness and information. Y'all rock.
Now I think I'll go spend a nothing-burger quarter.
