Hello. Strictly for educational purposes, can someone explain to me how exactly this happens. Yes, I know it's Die Deterioration, and I've seen a lot of varieties of it but I've never seen such strong deformation on letters while not being accompanied by flow lines, or indentations, or deformed lettering. Especially that flared C - honestly, I find it fascinating. But anyway, can someone explain what causing this particular type of DD? Thank you.

Oh darn, that's what happens when I post without proof reading. "Letter deformation without letter deformation" ?! What mean to say was letters deformation without background distortion, like plating issues or bubbles or poor metal mix.

I think that the 'C' is designed like that. With a strong serif. but the tip of the C looks soft or out of focus or something. But to me I do not see any DDD (yet). I'll have to find a nickel of the same year to compare to.

I don't have another one to compare with, but none of the images I saw on Mint site show any flare to the letters. If not DD then just MD then? Still odd, I was just curious about the mechanics that could produce it.
