I found this quarter a couple weeks ago roll searching with my kids. 2014 Arches National Park quarter with, I believe, a die chip.

I believe it's a chip because the rock extends out from the field. It seems like this could be a reasonable explanation for the extra material and that it could occur during the minting process. Aesthetically it is nicely placed to look like a rock and I only found it because I was comparing a few at the same time to choose which to put in a folder.

I apologize for my cell phone picture quality.

My quarter on the left, as-intended quarter on the right:

I wonder if a buffalo had visited that spot and left a 'gift'

If any mods are reading this and would mind changing the title of this post to read, "2014 Arches National Park - Buffalo 'Gift' - Die Chip?" I would be forever in your debt.

@tyr, I absolutely love having folks be forever in my debt, but I think that your title is pretty good as is.

Sometimes I may come off a bit prudish, but we really do try to keep the atmosphere here family-friendly and I'm thinking that adding a scatological reference to the title might be a bit much. I hope that you understand this decision, but if you really want to push to see what is possible, then please click on the little hotlink that says "report this post to the staff" and I'll make sure that the mods discuss this as a group. I may very well be in the minority on this and you would get your wish.
