I picked this up recently. For those that might not know, there was only one obverse and two reverse pairings for 1833. B-2 obverse has lots of die rust defects, hence the surface blisters at 2, 6, and 10 o'clock in addition to the die clashing below the ear. On the reverse, there's the "O" over "OF," doubled claw tips below left talon, remnants of another "A" at left of "America," and eagle without a tongue from what I can tell. I will probably give it a soak in acetone at some point as the surfaces look a little grimy, but wanted some pictures as it was on arrival. My inclination is about VF30/35, what says the CCF?

Has "the look." This is a die state with the rust but without the strong clash under the eagle's left wing.
Probably VF35, I agree. I'd leave it alone and not acetone it.

Thanks for the feedback, all. I will skip the acetone.

Definitely not EF; the 1831-1838 Capped Bust quarters very frequently have stronger reverses than obverses. The wear on the drapery as well as on the cheek and above the eye holds this to VF, but it's a very nice VF-30 or VF-35. I agree with the other commenters that I would not use acetone on it.

I think it will make EF-40.

Hi, newbie here. Curious regarding the few recommendations "dont acetone it", as I was of the understanding that was a fairly safe operation with minimal downsides.
I have a few coins I'm looking to have graded, and was all set to acetone soak them but now have reservations.

@fredm2654, I'm a relative newbie as well. For the most part it does no harm, but you still may have unexpected results. See link to an 1817 half dollar that I dipped in acetone and the unexpected result. I definitely preferred the prd-dipped look. http://goccf.com/t/455392

i think it depends on the individual coin. in this case it is not going to make a difference in grade or price therefore there is no reason for it and even though it would not harm the coin as adam stated, you don't know what it can reveal that the acetone could not remove which could affect eye appeal and at a minimum lower the value.
