So I bought this 1964D from an online seller for $1. It was in a dusty coin flip and looked like it might have a decent strike. On PCGS website the 64D's have weak strikes and dies that have had some use. However, there's 21 coins that they have given MS-67 and 7 coins MS-67+.

This coin does have some marks but it seems to have a pretty good strike, might be early die state and I think it has frost on Lincoln and all the devices. There's a gritty texture that is on the 64D Lincoln and the devices that seems to react different with the light. For example, liberty on the 64D appears lighter compared to the surrounding fields. I also posted a couple pictures of a 1963D to compare the coins. The 63D has a smoother and darker appearance on Lincoln and the devices.

The 64D seems to have a different more vivid appearance. Is this gritty texture frost? The light seems to react different with the gritty texture. Lincoln seems to have lighter colors that contrast with the surrounding fields. The fields don't seem to have the gritty texture.

What grade would you give this coin? There are marks on the reverse near the designer initials and on the obverse in the fields near Lincoln face.

Thanks for taking a look and sorry for all the pictures!!

the blow up photos are not necessary. we only need those if there is question on a particular area of a coin such as the steps on a jefferson.

your reverse photo needs cropped to look like the obv photo and there is too much glare from the lighting to see the surfaces especially the steps. there are quite a few ticks around the rims on both sides. I'm not seeing the level of luster you are commenting about. maybe its the photos. I'm not even sure the coin would pull an RD color based on these.

MS63 maybe 64. too much chatter to make 65. as for color, without better photos i'd say RB

Hey everyone thanks for taking a look! Sorry for all the pictures! I actually considered creating 2 posts for this coin- one for a grading opinion and another for a question on frost.

I posted close up pictures to try and show the gritty texture that's on Lincoln and the devices. I think it might be frost that is similar to what is seen on proof coins.

I agree the coin has marks on it, however, for a 64D I think it has a good strike and is an early die state coin. The coins color is RD and it has good luster. I took some of the pictures with an iPhone and had to adjust the lighting a bit due to the brightness.

Thanks again for taking a look! I still would be interested to learn more about the gritty texture that I think might be frosting?

I posted one more picture of the gritty texture that is on Lincoln and the devices. Could this be frost like is seen on proof coins?

Typical MS example, MS-63. The "frost" is just an artifact of the strike, nothing special here.
