I've ordered a P and D uncirculated coins sets, directly from US Mint but looking a bit closer it appears that nearly every coin is very much damaged: tons of scratches, dents, nicks, etc. I've gotten less circulated coins in change at the gas stations! Is it normal? I thought "certified uncirculated" means that coins would be in pristine condition. I'll post 1 photo, of course it's going to be poor quality (it's packaged) but you really don't need better photo to see the damage.

That looks quite damaged to me. What are your options? Does the Mint allow for returns?
I don't purchase from the Mint so I'm not aware of their policies on expected quality and customer service.

Mint quality has gotten bad over the years. Return it. The uncirculated sets have lost value long term.

They give 7 days to return an order, they also do not cover shipping cost, so I would still lose a good bit of money paying for shipping it to me and back as well. At this point I might as well just keep it as it is. I will try to contaxt them tomorrow regarding the possibility of an exchange, but somehow I don't think they'll allow it. But this is the first and the last time I'm ordering from the Mint.

I purchased uncirculated mint sets in the 80's and 90's most are worth very little over face. In terms of appreciation the uncirculated mint sets are probably the biggest value loser of mint items. Just based on my experience.

uncirculated does not mean void of marks etc. it could have have banged around in a bin at the mint. other than pre 65 sets and specialty sets there are very few that have increased value over their purchase price.
PCGS & Numismedia don't even list them in their price database. I don't purchase them for that reason. its probably better to break the set up and sell the better pieces than to pay to have it returned. maybe post the better ones here for review to see if you can get anything for them

@panzaldi to be honest, I bought the set not as much as valuable commodity but specifically to have few high grade coins for myself. And it has Jovita Idar quarter that I didn't have. I would understand if the coins had a few minor scratches but look at that! It looks like someone stepped on it and drag with the foot across the road. But I guess I will open both sets as you suggest, there is no reason to try to keep them preserved.

I guess you can't depend on Mint Sets for quality now. You'll have to cherry pick from rolls.

I believe if you call the mint, you can request a return label. It will be postage paid by them.

@panzaldi so, I opened the set and there is absolutely nothing worth bother. There isn't a single coin that would rate above 63, and majority is far less than that. Lesson learned.
