This is my father in laws. He is trying to find out if this is a true double stamp. We cannot find another one like it.
Thank you!

to the CCF!

Your coin appears to have a layer of glue on the reverse. It may have been glued to another cent and picked up the details of that coin as it dried. You may want to see if it chips off or you can soak the coin in acetone. If you use acetone make sure to follow the directions on the label. Acetone is flammable and can cause an explosion if used incorrectly.

It is glue or epoxy. 100% pure acetone will work unless it is epoxy.Not double stamped, PMD.

Usually the second strike will flatten the details of the first strike on coins that are double struck. It also will involve all of the raised devices on the coin, not just a central area as seen here.

Here are a few other coins that have glue that was thought to be a double struck coin.

This is what I would expect to see if it were a true double struck coin and both sides would show some doubling of details.

to the CCF 100% glue. We see a lot of these around here. Almost all of us have fell to thinking we have an error when we first seen glue on a coin.

@addy, first welcome to CCF.

Second, can you please tell us the date and mint for this cent? I'd like to add this information to the title. Thx.

I fixed the first picture for you; it had the word "stamped?" over-writing part of the filename. Spence, you can a now see the date and mintmark.

The other key indicator that it's glue (or some glue-like substance) stuck to the coin is the ring of different colour, that just happens to coincide with the area where the double-struck details appear. The metal in this area looks un-oxidized, as if something was physically separating the coin from the air only at that point. This clearly indicates to me that whatever caused the double-striking, also caused the discoloration. You can even clearly follow the "shoreline" of where the blob of glue is or isn't. A double-struck coin shows none of these features. A layer of glue is the most logical explanation for this appearance.

Agreed, just glue or epoxy. A pure acetone soak should take care of it.
