I agree, some substance has filled the obverse of this cent up the the level of the rim.
When this topic got broken apart, this particular post should have stayed with the original one.

oh yeah! forgot to say welcome to you here (I do that sometimes)

Anyway we have seen this on many of the new zinc coins, but can't remember what the verdict was.
I'll have to go back and look for it.

to the CCF It's called Solid State Diffusion. The copper plating disengages and leaves the zinc core exposed.
