I found this in a box that's been sitting untouched since at least 1990. I took it to a coin show, and while it garnered much interest, they said it would only be worth about $35 on the open market. It's been circulated, folded and has some wear-n-tear, but in good shape for the most part. It is 1988A series with nothing notable on the face, but the back has this ink stain. The people at the coin show said it was identifiable as regulated currency ink, and that it is not counterfeit.

Can anyone add some insight?

Welcome to CCF.
I'm not certain if it's an ink smear or solvent smear. Either way, it's pretty cool. Error notes had their hay day in the 70s and 80s. If it was uncirculated, or if the stain was larger, it would be worth between $100-$200. But the way it stands, I'd value it between $25 and $50. Maybe more on ebay.

Ink smear error with a tear. Grade VF. Worth $25-$40. I agree with Steve and the coin guys.

Thank you Steve, that does help a lot! I'm not sure what to do with it, but I'll keep your words in mind.

And thank you for the kind Welcome. I may be asking a lot of questions as I go through my inherited coin/cash collection. This 5 dollar bill is just the beginning.
