Greetings!
I found this 2006 Penny in a Loomis Coin Roll.
I originally thought I found a triple die clash coin.

My local coin dealer told me it was an "Epoxy Glue Coin".

He explained to me that some Epoxy got on the coin, and then other coins made an imprint in the Glue, and that this was a post mint damage coin.

He very patiently explained it to me, and I agree with him. I did not find a triple die clash coin, and what I have is an PMD coin involving Epoxy glue.

This is the part I'm confused on.

When I told him I intended to clean the glue off of the coin, he advised me not to do that telling me that the coin would be considered as "CLEANED".

I repeated my intentions telling him I didn't want someone else to find this coin after I put it back in circulation, and be fooled by what looks like a die clash coin, when it's a PMD.

He said again, if you do that, it will be considered clean, and he walked off.

My question is, why that coin dealer care about a PMD coin getting the Epoxy glue cleaned off of the coin.

When I got home, I wished I had pressed him on it.

Does this coin have any redeemable monetary value?
The Obverse does appear to have a high mint state value, the same with the Reverse with the Epoxy glue.

Thx!!

No this coin is worth only 1 cent. But he is correct that removing the glue would could be considered 'cleaning'. On the other hand it could also be considered 'conservation' too.
BUT when the glue comes off, the toning will come off too, leaving a bright copper color and dark where the glue was not.
However in this case - I think it is a spender and a soak in acetone to remove impurities is not considered cleaning.

to the CCF!

The coin is worth face value with or without the glue. While it has little or no chance of gaining any value, if something did happen to make it rare, any damage caused by removing the glue now could eliminate any potential value in the future.

I'd add it to my 'Oddities' collection and keep it as is.

One could treat this situation as an opportunity to learn about how glue and coins 'interact'. I'd go ahead and give the coin a long soak in 100% acetone. To begin with, the coin appears to be a very common 2006 cent, so there's no hyper value at risk here.

Acetone will not remove epoxy.
Research the difference between cleaning and conserving, there is a difference. If you are concerned about putting it back into circulation, just destroy it. Why even waste the acetone on it?

Cured epoxy generally can only be removed by heating it to soften it up and then mechanically removing it.

I say give it a shot. It may be epoxy, it may not. If it doesn't remove or reduce it, fine. If it does.....

Here's a thought - swallow it, and that will solve all the issues.

Swallowing it will give you zinc poisoning so don't do that.

and I would advise against the swallowing of circulated coins - could be dad, but your pride is another thing entirely. You can do that all day long with no ill effects...

It's PMD. Glue or epoxy. Acetone might remove it.
