Oh the pain! The pain! *shaking head* While I am fully aware that one cannot win them all, the blow of missing out on an inspirational OOF (Object Of Fascination) is a real gut-punch! Here is a beeeeautiful Greek specimen that will unfortunately remain beyond my grasp. A stunning AR tetradrachm. This marvelous coin checked all the boxes for me: large flan, solid strike, intriguing imperfections, and beautifully rendered portrait of Apollo!  Greece, Aeolis, Myrina. AR Tetradrachm, 115-145 BCE. Obverse: laureate head of Apollo, facing right. Reverse: MURINAIWN, Apollo of Grynium, standing right, holding phiale in his right hand and a filleted branch in his left hand. Omphalos and amphora before his feet. Three monograms in the outer left field, all within a laurel wreath border. 35.2mm, 15.76 grams Not to worry. *sigh* I will survive...but it'll sting a bit for awhile. I know I can't be the first to feel this kind of disappointment. I invite my fellow Community Members to share stories of "The One That Got Away"! It does, Bob...and it is. The acquisition price was a little above my comfort level, but I was willing to take the pinch. Unfortunately the seller cannot ship outside the European Union due to the hassles of export license procedures and "additional requirements".
I can, however, stare longingly at the picture. So I've got THAT goin' for me!

I feel your pain, Mike. What a beautiful portrait. Hopefully there will be another coming along in the future. Some time ago I had my heart set on a small Greek bronze with a slug on the reverse - yes a slug. It would have taken pride of place in my "animals" collection. I didn't think there would be much interest in a slug, but the winning bid was 2 1/2 times my maximum! I hadn't seen one before and I haven't seen another since. It still rankles.

From your lips to Apollo's ears! *smile* Your 'slug' story is both amusing and wrenching. I'm sure as collectors we have all felt the disappointment of a missed target. Especially within an auction venue, as it is a drawn out process...with renewed hope at each bid. Yeah, jbuck. It is akin to seeing a Crush walking arm-in-arm with someone else. That twinge of disappointment. Ouch! I will, however, get over it...as soon as my eye is caught by a new "love"!

Sometimes it's good to vent - there will be others, but the wait hurts as well. Unlike your situation, quite a few excellent opportunities were missed that were completely my fault. Always the cheapskate, I've come across great deals on some excellent examples of coins, only to try to negotiate better price. The only pic I have is one of Nero that was offered for sale for about $45. Not the greatest example, but well within my budget.   But I've lost New and Old style Athena Tetradrachms in VF-XF condition for under $175 a piece, rare Romans, like Quietus and Macrianus for dirt cheap - the list goes on and on. I've gotta learn how to close a great deal fast.

We often hear about buyer's remorse...but non-buyer's remorse can be just as painful. I sympathize, travelcoin. Really do. When I am faced with the threat of buyers-remorse I side with inspiration. Does the coin "speak to me"? I guess it depends on your focus. I have learned to keep my focus narrow. Which certainly helps me stick to my limited budget. I hate to pile on here, but I put a bid in on this one the other day, and of course lost. I underbid and it went for a steal of a deal. So my bidding skills still need much improvement. However, Greeks are not my area, so I'll get over it soon enough. It's a beauty though.
