Hi all,
I was asked to help a family member assess a coin collection. Which has been in a bank box for decades. Mainly silver, but some copper coins too.
Anyways the whole collection is in pvc flips. And the coins are all experiencing some level of green disease.
Normally I would not do anything to coins, but there is a 1858 half and a 1928 peace that I'd like to save among the rest of the collection.
And then move the coins to better storage options.
Any advice, safe cleaning links/methods, would be appreciated.

100% pure acetone and if need be, Verdi-Care. Also, all new 2x2 holders and Air-Tite capsules for the rarer ones. John1

Any guidance on acetone bath?
Maximum duration in bath for coin preservation?
Maximum baths?
Can I gently rub the coin if so with what objects? (I.e. fingers, soft cloth)
Assuming glass bowl, no gloves due to reaction with acetone.
Also is this guidance just for silver coins?
Thanks for the reply!

Quote: Maximum baths? There is no maximum. Do it as much as it takes. You may have to make several rounds as the acetone can only remove so much before it is saturated or evapourates. When it is all gone, you should do one final flowing rinse of fresh acetone to make sure no residue remains (it can redeposit as the acetone dries). Do not rinse with water! Acetone dries on its own. Quote: Also is this guidance just for silver coins? Acetone is good for all coins. It only affects the organic matter. The metal is left unharmed. The only exception involves bright red copper and sunlight, so make sure you do this in the shade.

Too bad about these coins. do you have any images of them before you start the bathing in acetone? I for one would love to see before and after images to see your restoration progress.

For the more valuable coins, I'd send them in for slab + resto.
