In my opinion these are die breaks, the coin weighs out at 2.38 grams, so a tad under. I'd expect solder to add a fairly significant amount of weight. The unusual shape of the breaks also matches what I see on other Mercs on cudsoncoins.

What do you think?

Well I'm not seeing any weakness of the strike on the obverse, which is something I would expect to see on Cuds of this side. Also it is not raised above the rim (but could be worn down)
I'll say not a Cud

I don't think they're Cuds. Maybe solder?

It also looks out of round which would make it lighter in weight.

It can't be Cuds if the rim is intact, can it?

No it cannot, if that part of the die broke away then the rim details would also be gone..

How does making a coin out of round make it lighter too?
It looks out of round because the edge most likely was shaved away making it lighter in weight.
