Hi All, I am trying to decide what to do with my 1828 half, (O-104). I would appreciate some feedback on grade, the effect of the scratch on the shield, and who to send it to for slab. Thanks in advance. Rich

First, beautiful coin!
Second, this is O-101, not O-104. The die break in the reverse F is diagnostic of this variety. Unfortunately that makes it a very common 1828, so no variety premium.
Third, your coin is definitely a high-end AU. It's always difficult to tell the difference between AU-55 and AU-58 from a single photo, but in my opinion it is either AU-58 or AU-55+. I have seen similar scratches on choice AU examples that have straight graded, so I personally do not think the scratch would warrant a details grade.
As for slabbing, I usually prefer PCGS for bust coinage. If you'd like to sell it, I would say the slabbing is worth it, since the difference between an AU-55 and an AU-58 is around $200.
Boy, I'd love to see the luster on this one in-hand.

Knockout. I can see little if any wear. I'll go with AU-58. to the CCF!

Thanks! I thought that the die break on the front of her shoulder looked like 104.

A beauty! AU-58 but a TPG giving it an MS grade would not surprise me.

I'll say high AU.

AU-58, the only significant detractor is a small cut on the shield bars.

first...nice bust half with what appears to be some luster still hanging around my first thought was AU58 but one thing you need to keep in mind with this series is the strike issues and inability of the TPG's to grade these efficiently. for some reason, in a lot of cases we have seen, they drop the grade knocking it either too much for strike or thinking its actual wear when it is strike related. it could go either AU55 or 58 depending on who looks at the coin next I don't slab coins as it chews up to much value of a coin imo, you need to decide if the cost of grading is worth it. if it was mine and I was going to hang onto it, I would put it in an airtite holder two reasons to slab 1. its a rare coin that needs authenticated and preserved 2. you are planning on selling the coin and the cost of acquisition plus the grading fee's would warrant it without chewing up all your profit PCGS charges a minimum of $69 for a subscription other subscription levels include grading vouchers though so you could reduce these costs. add to the subscription cost, per coin grading cost which I think for this one might be $22, shipping & ins both ways (1-4 coins is $27 if the total value is under $1000) NGC - economy grading tier is $23, plus $10 handling fee, plus $28 for shipping (1-5 coins). ANACS grading would be $16 but there's a 5 coin minimum. Shipping would be $29-35.

Beautiful piece! 55-58 range, wouldn't be surprised to see it in either holder.

Slabbing depends on your plan with your coin. Are you looking to sell or preserve in your collection?

I will be selling it within a few years. Depends on the value and my tax situation. Nothing set in stone.

I am curious about something. The total consensus here is that this coin should grade AU 55 or 58. I consider grading to be a mystery. However, I have compared the photos of my coin to those on the PCGS grading site of the MS68 example (6148) they show, and honestly, I don't see much difference. Perhaps you all do! To my eyes the MS65 photos show more wear than mine! But for my own education I would love to hear back what others see as the difference between the 2 coins that make them so different.

You coin is not mint state because there is little to no luster left on the bust. Some luster is gone in the fields as well. While the strike is firm and almost 100% of the detail remains, the thinnest layer was worn off erasing luster in some areas, removing it from the mint state category.
Man I love this coin! It has the perfect look for a CBH.
