If it were a die clash, Jefferson's profile would be upside down, mirrored left to right, and indented in the surface.

Deformation of the die face caused by progressive indirect design transfer would happen in the same place as a die clash, but be soft and indistinct.

1973-Nickel-Jefferson-Outline-On-Reverse-Side?
PIDT is possible, but on Jefferson nickels, it almost always has that very peculiar horseshoe shape. The first thing to sink is the curve below Five Cents, with the sunken arc starting from the M and last O of Monticello. Then the two curves above the building begin to sink, too.

I'm in the stain camp on this one.
