I wonder why the "lines" don't flatten out or disappear after the strike?

After Will sent me the article, I remembered the study but had to read it a couple of times to fully understand it. It is my understanding that the grease stands in these furrows, like water in a tilled field. This will give the strike enough resistance to not fully obliterate the striations, especially in the weaker struck areas of a coin. That's my take on it and the simplest way I know to explain it, as I am pretty simple.
