Hi All, I can't find any documentation on this, and not sure what to make of it. It certainly looks like extra material?

As E&V says, this is a die chip. It's not extra metal, but part of the original planchet that was struck by a die with that area broken off. The metal of the planchet was forced into the chip on the die by the pressure of the strike.
