Pretty sure this Mercury dime is a strong candidate for an inverted knob-S mint mark, FS-504. I had been watching the coin with the intent to buy it, resubmit for variety attribution, and then liquidate. Alas, the price got too high for my risk tolerance. Probably the bidders really liked the colorful toning on this one. I didn't mention it here before the auction finished, so as to not disrupt any CCF bidders.

If any of you bought that coin, you should definitely examine the mint mark under magnification. The coin could be worth quite a bit more than $75.

For when the auction pics come down and folks still want to study what the mintmark looked like, here is a close-up:

The knob-S has multiple distinguishing features. The top termination is an extended teardrop shape connected by a thin line. The top middle curve displays a triangular cut. The bottom curve features a circular shape that departs as a rectangular cut. The bottom termination is a flat bell shape.

Left two are PCGS typical 1945-S Mercury dimes with knob-S mint marks. Middle is this coin. Right two are PCGS inverted FS-504.

I agree with Brand - the top of the MM ends in that knob, but it slightly flattened at the end, just like the other 2 examples on the right of the center (IMM's). The examples on the left have the flattened knob on the bottom (the normal ones)

Too bad you can't contact the buyer to tell them that..

I guess we could contact the seller and tell them that, but there is a moral hazard to them promptly developing seller's remorse, "losing" the coin in the shop, and issuing a refund.

Maybe it will show up in a registry set, and someone can give them a nudge from there.

It is IMM, I have a couple. They are not in high demand on the 1945 S, but they can be on the 1942 S.

Edit - When searching for the 1945 S IMM be sure to keep an eye out for this - Inverted S/Horizontal S. MMS-006 (Ball Serif). FS-503.
