In tonight's TCNC sale, there were a number of lots of low-ball Cdn silver dollars with a named pedigree "Low-Ball Cornwell".

Several were given the "Details" assessment with "Artificially Worn" as the reason.

Thoughts on what are the markers for artificial wear -- is it just a matter of unexpected wear pattern?
Wondering if PCGS has seen enough of highly-worn Canadian silver dollars to make that assessment.

Some examples,

(the wear on this one definitely does not "feel" right IMHO, but what do I know of highly-worn coins )

Well, I guess that there are registry-type sets for ultra-worn coins from what I hear. I know someone who has a small table at coin shows with all-worn items. I guess to each his own. Maybe bragging rights are worth something, eeven if no numbers assigned.

Sigh...I guess the interest in lowballs would lead to their creation by artificial means. No idea how to identify that sort of wear....

An interesting way to turn a F/VF melt value dollar into something more valuable.

@purelywasted - yes! So it sort of begs the question whether they're really just "melt" value.

It is a great question. I really like the look of some lowballs, but those were a bit too worn for my taste and the color was meh. Which I guess is why they got the details label.

I would like to build a type set of G's, where everything is visible, but evenly worn and has nice contrasting tone. One day I will get around to seeing what I have and what to fill in.

Those 3 coins in the OP all have very unusual wear patterns, especially the third one with AG level wear and full rims. Never heard of details for artificial wear before, but these seem appropriate for that designation.

What a world; pay more for less ! Next, with holes ! Imagine the cost of a holed, P-2, JOP dollar ! The oldest dollar only circulated for 20 years at most (and not many pre-Liz in circulation by 1960).

Keeping a low-grade coin that Grandpa used to carry in his pocket : wonderful keepsake !
Putting one in a 2x2 and marking "filler" because one day you'll find a better one : good idea.
Finding one for a dollar at a flea market or Goodwill store because they didn't know that it was worth .6 tr.oz. of silver : great find !
Finding one or a bunch while metal-detecting : SCORE !
Amassing a whole pile to give to you kids or grandkids for future gains when the price of silver is skyhigh : excellent idea.
Paying more than bullion : cause for a numismatic intervention , including retrograde therapy and a Charlton catalogue .
Paying a grading company to grade them :

Here are 2 of the coins from the auction; one is graded AG-3, the other is VG-8 !!! So if I own the one they called VG-8, do I break it out and send it to be regraded, and hope it gets a G-4, worth much more ? Seriously ? That's their VG-8 ?

Terry .... Why would someone pay to have one of those cert'd when the cost for the TPG is, or will be, more than the coin will ever be worth, even if Ag gets to $40/oz?

Okie, I guess the emojis confused you. The guy laughing is my reaction to sending them for grading, and the headslaps are for the ones sending them.
