As I am just learning about Liberty nickels, I thought I would start with the first year of 1883 and make an inexpensive purchase. Comparing to Photograde, it seems like the hair, flower, and leaf details would put this coin around XF45 to AU50. Based on the PCGS pictures, it seems that a few stars often lack line definition, but that's just accepted? The denticle flattening also puzzled me, is that more of a die wear issue or from circulation wear? Looking forward to the education on this one. Am I in the ballpark on grade? Not sure about a cleaning, but the surfaces seem quite clear of gunk compared to the crevices. Seems like maybe a touch of verdigris forming on the right obverse debticles and a few smaller spots.

Glad to hear I did alright on this one. I'd call it six bucks well spent! As always, thanks for the help. =)

AU50. Like the Shield nickels before them, the V nickels had their share of die issues, especially early in the run. 1883 (both cents and no cents) have a ton of broken dies, die cracks, Cuds, chips, Strike Doubling, and all sorts of other interesting die artifacts to find.

you got that overhead light glare working again... strike can always be considered on any coin. it is a component that is part of determining the end grade however not weighted likes scratches, marks, scuffs etc. obv K3 appears to have some verdigris. probably should be addressed. looks like there might be some on the rev also along the rim from K2-K3 imbedded in the denticles. its a little dull for an AU coin. i'd acetone this one i think its closer to AU55 but would net it down to AU53 for lack of luster

Plunked it into the acetone.
Let me ask this about the glare: on the obverse, the problem area is the lower left third, right? If we drew a line through the nose and the bottom curl, everything north and east of that is acceptable?
I ask because the most brightly illuminated portion is probably where the axial glass was closest to the coin. But I don't remember if I snapped in the bottom light guard for this photo. That might have allowed a lot more light in the bottom to bounce off the glass. Normally I don't bother unless the coin is reflective or has a lot of luster. Once I pull the nickel from the acetone, I will take another pic where it is more centered in the light box, and I will install the guard, and we can see if that makes a satisfactory difference. But it's a super cheap DIY box, and it will always have some limitations.

i don't think the photos are that bad actually. I think we can grade from these but the glare, like on the neck, appears to hiding quite a few scratches. i'll add that there is a good chance the coin was cleaned at some point as anything AU or better should not have dull surfaces like we see here. if it was cleaned, it was lightly done and would not details the coin. the other area to look at is on the reverse under the T in UNITED. could be a spot of corrosion. the 83 no cents is so common high end problem free coins are available at reasonable prices. i'd call this a hole filler until a better example came along
