Hi All,

I would love to hear grade opinions for this coin please. Though the pictures may not show it, it does have almost complete mint luster still intact. I do see wear in the jewels in one area of the band, but no wear around it that is making me concerned that maybe it was just weakly struck at that one point.

thanks for your help

malissa

Hello Malissa
judging from your pix my guess would be VF30. it APPEARS that is has some rim nicks and some regular wear overall and specially the Kings face.
sorry to dissappoint you and I hope I am wrong.
I have a similar one and thought it would grade MS.... well it might at NGC, but never at ICCS.

There is some slight wear, but overall this coin looks to be AU-55.

With not all the pearls showing, I would give it a EF-40, nice coin.

Well.. it doesn't look like they are worn, it looks like they were never there..? At least from this pic..

Here's me being a pain in your behind: Would you mind posting a close-up of just the pearls?

Yep, nice coin!
I've seen where strike affects pearl detail, although I think wear did play a role here.
If you look at the crown band just left of the diamond, notice how it's flattened? That's the first place to wear.
So given the crown band as well as wear on the moustache tip and regalia, there's definitely some wear.
Going to agree with Shafta here and say EF40. Even with a light strike, the crown band would need to be stronger for AU.

Ok.. gotcha, Kurt. I'd still like to see a close-up, just for my own curiosity... and edumacation..

thanks everyone! I really love Newfoundland coins and it's nice to find them in higher grades when I can. I will try to get the up close on the beads pic sometime today.

I have this exact coin in VF condition. The specimen in the picture I would grade AU-50. It has a lot of problems. Scratches, been cleaned (unevenly), slight wear throughout the highest points of the portrait. I'm not a professional grader but I feel pretty strongly about this one. My first post on this forum. It sounds like fun!
