My observation of recent is that there is very little availability for high end World coins, prices being driven higher. My assumption - people are holding them, rather then selling. The middle tier is flooded, dropping significant value.

Any thoughts? This is the feedback I get from collectors and dealers alike.

Zohar444- I'd have to agree with wwhitman. haha. But in all sincerity, I think that you are right. I was at a show a couple of weeks ago, and I was amazed at how cheap some middle range coins were. At the same time, I saw very few upper end coins.

I don't know much about high end coins. To echo what Archraz said, I usually collect in the $50-100 range and can't believe the recent increase in availability that I have seen.

I was at a show on 4/18 and there was an abundance of common material but very few really scarce/rare coins. Only one CC $20 in the whole show, almost no high end early type (although one dealer had a beautiful XF 1795 dollar but he wanted the sun and the moon for it.) I think the rare stuf has been put in the vault for a while, but I think the reason is the rapidly fluctuating price of gold and silver. Seems to me whenever gold and silver get active, the rare coins disappear until the market settles. I know several collectors (myself included) who try to catch run ups in gold and then convert to rare coins. Buy 10 1 oz gold coins in the low 800 range and sell back in the high 900 range and use the profit to pick up $1000 in rare coins for the collection. Dealers don't always know how to adjust the value of rare coins when the spot price is moving around so they just take the rare ones out of the showcase. My humble opinion of course.
