On the reverse of these coins there is on the small 5 center is a whale. On the larger on there is a 10 and wheat. They are aluminum. Where are they from?

These are both standard issues of a 5 and 10 Lire coins from Italy.

yes, they are the 5 and 10 Lire as reported on the coins from REPUBBLICA ITALIANA, of course no more minted since 2002, because now there is Mister Euro.

Were they used before the Euro changeover?

Also, what was the lowest denomination that was used before the changeover?

They were produced up to the changeover, but I don't think they had been used since the sixties. There were also a 1 and 2 lire used up to the end of the fifties.

It looks from Krause like the lowest denomination used up to the changeover was the 20 lire as it appears in a circulated condition up to that time.

I remember there were between 1 and 2 thousand lire to the pound when they changed to Euros. So a 10 lire would have been about as much use as a US cent today.
