I don't know, maybe it's just me pining for the good old days but I was very disappointed in the very low dealer turn out at the recent ONA coin show in Hamilton.
Borderline 'shocked' I would even say.............. Edited by doubleeagle59 04/26/2024 1:31 pm

Sign of the times I am afraid. A few reasons . More and more business takes place online these days . Auctions are a huge part of the hobby now . A lot of dealers (myself included ) are getting older, winding it down. Travel and related costs are over the top these days . Security is a major issue , with show robberies now common. Profit margins for dealers are razor thin.

Pacificoin.....I agree with everything you said but the last four Ontario local coin shows were better than this ONA and I'm just a little puzzled by it.

I bet the Guelph show this weekend will have more buzz, probably poorly run remember the Kingston ONA a few years back

I wonder if the show fell victim to mismanagement..
I was prepared to go, the online calendar said the show was Friday and Saturday, there was zero information beyond that about timing.
I called the Wednesday or Thursday before the show, to confirm the opening time on Friday, while with a friend who came from London Ontario to attend.
We were informed that the show actually started on Saturday, and that it was not open Friday. After poking a bit more as to why the information posted online was not just bare bones but also inaccurate, I was informed that some people who bought 'kits' far in advance were allowed entry on Friday.
I asked about the kits, explained our dissatisfaction with the situation and was told that we could pay the $35 per kit to enter the show on Friday at noon. We paid for our kits, simply because we built all of our plans around going Friday...we hit the road and got there for noon sharp, only to be told we had the wrong information and had to kick rocks until 2:00, when we'd actually be let in. The show was unimpressive..

I'm starting to think it was not very well run and promoted.
Also, could the fees for a dealer's table be a lot greater than at local shows?

I wasn't able to attend, but sorry to hear the show was disappointing. The schedule on the ONA website does say "2:00 pm - 6:00 pm Bourse Floor open to Registrants". I'm not sure how far in advance that was posted though. This is the ONA's way of trying to encourage people to register for the full convention and not just go to the bourse. I understand their logic as costs are cheaper per person the more you have.

@cdncoins that very well may have been posted to the ONA site in a timely fashion, in fact I'd bet that it was..
I check the Canadian coin news online calendar of events, which is where I got the information I referenced earlier. It is good that they have the proper info on their own site, but it would still be nice if sufficient information was on the likely more widely used CCN calendar..I wonder who is to blame for the lack of information.
Being told we could arrive at noon was over the phone with an ONA higher-up though..so that is still pretty annoying.
At the end of the day I wish them nothing but the best and I'd still happily attend again, seeing another show fizzle out would be very sad, and I hope the shows that are struggling from mismanagement or low dealer/collector attendance can turn things around.

I attended as a dealer and had a very good show, but you're right about the atmosphere. At least those who did attend were serious.
