Saw this today and it's the reason I am so wary of coins in Rome.... This is being sold at a "legitimate" coin shop...

To my eye....a very fake 1869 half dollar... Am I missing something? Soft details, no luster despite being UNC?

If fake, it would fool me.

They can come slightly mushy as some of the dies were used into a late die state. I don't see any red flags although the photos are not the best to tell for certain.

Here are a few more photos... Admittedly, I have not handled a seated half before. And after the commemoratives I posted a few weeks ago I am inherently apprehensive. Further thoughts would be appreciated.

The photos just aren't clear enough to determine authenticity.

It looks polished and/or whizzed. It does appear genuine. This is a slightly better date but in that condition is not worth a lot. It wouldn't even consider paying $100 USD for it. $50 USD maybe but if I were you I'd just move along. Here is a far superior piece that sold for $154 on Heritage last year: https://coins.ha.com/itm/seated-hal...tion-071515#

Thank you everyone.
In hand... Especially after the commemoratives I recently posted... I didn't have a great feeling on this one.
It's priced well higher than retail and I'm not interested but this has been a decent way to learn the coin.
Thanks again...

I don't see obvious signs like you claim, what jumped out as counterfeit?

@NumismaticsFTW - there was no trace of a luster on a coind that doesn't show much circulation wear; I saw four questionally counterfeit commemorative half dollars about two weeks ago; there looked to be some non-bag mark holes in the fields; the details on the feathers were soft - almost animated vs solidly struck; maybe the whizzing made the coin look and feel too bright in hand? I also haven't handled this coin before. Does that make sense?

I'm not convinced the coin is genuine, just can't tell with these photos.
