Hi all, I picked up these two hammered pennies and they have both got me a bit stumped in identities, I have a couple of reference books, SPINK 2009, and Coincraft 2009, the latter give excellent detail about legend inscription, and the first one The legend appears to read as indicated on the photos, but it doesn't make any sense to me, I know most Edward I II III Pennies should read EDWARD REX ANGL HYB, but I cant find any reference to the legend ending in ANGLI. And the Obverse should read CIVITAS LONDON,EBORACHI, etc, but if you look at the Obverse legend from 9 oclock to 12 there are definately 5 letters, I find no references to this anywhere. The other Penny has me equally stumped as I cannot find any with this crown and the legend is very WIREY like? could this be a contemporary forgery? Any help on these would be much appreciated.

Hi from the research I did it looks like the first coin is an Edward III coin minted in London before the Treaty of Bretigny in 1360. Also looking through my Spink 2009 I found the wording of the coin on page 165 towards the bottom. I hope this helps and is correct. Thanks Bryan

Sorry about that, what I meant was in the discription of the coin it says it under coin 1630. The coins were also minted at Durham and York. Bryan

I think the first one is definately Edward III and the reverse thta stumped me is Either LONDON , YORK or Durham, the mystery 5 letters in the 4th quarter is actually 4 letters CIVI with what I thought was a 5th letter is actually a crozier on the long cross at 9 0clock, it would be good to know which mint it is. Has anyone any suggestions for the 2nd coin. Regards Jim

I did some research also and found that it could be an Edward III from a different mint and or a different maker. Check this link out. I believe the coin in the picture to the left is your second coin. So it looks like the 2nd coin was minted in Durham. http://www.britishmuseum.org/explor...__penny.aspx

The first one looks to read CIVI TAS DVN OLM making it Durham mint. Looks to be a Post Treaty Issue, 1369-77, with crozier on reverse and no mark on breast and a plain cross on obverse. Making this Spink 1645 of Bishop Hatfield. The second one looks to read CIVI TAS LON DON making it London mint. It appears to be of Edward IV's Second Reign, 1471-83. No marks by bust but there is no mint mark visible, it is most likely Spink 2110. Kindest Regards, Clive.
