CAC - Here is a gorgeous 1937 50c Roanoke to kick off the week! This beauty has an original tab-toned obverse, indicating it was stored in its original packaging for a long time. This coin commemorates the 350th anniversary of the Roanoke Colony (present-day North Carolina), founded in 1587.

This colonization was led by Governor John White, who, after establishing the settlement, returned to England for supplies. Upon White's return, the settlement was empty, with homes dismantled. To this day, nobody really knows what happened to the colony. In 1937, during the Great Depression, these coins were sold to collectors for $1.65 each. This amount could buy basic groceries for an entire week. Proceeds were given to the Roanoke Colony Memorial Association for future events. This piece is graded CAC MS68.

While I can appreciate the coin's originality. I'm not a fan of its toning - I find it intrusive and distracting.

To each their now, but I have never been a fan of this heavy tab toning. I find it very distracting to the eye.

very odd toning pattern on this one.

The coin likely spent a fair amount of time in a particular type of coin holder/folder. Perhaps, one like this from the original issue:

An incredibly preserved coin! While I have many commemoratives with attractive toning that enhances the beauty of the coin (in my opinion, at least), I find darker tab toning to be a bit harsh with the abrupt breaks between the toned and untoned areas.
