What would you grade this coin? I didn't take the photos.

This looks to be like a 1922 first hub run coin or "Trial Strike". The detached olive branch and the sharp lettering give it away. What are your thoughts on this raw coin?

Thanks
Dan

Just a normal 1922 Peace dollar. Not a Trial Strike at all. A die Trial Strike would be an extremely soft strike to test the dies and the press. What remains is a coin with few details.

too much glare to assess her plus the coin is at an angle. pretty much impossible to determine if all the luster is there or not. left obv field above IN appears to be void of luster and there are some field marks there. there are some fine lines through most of the letters on both sides. whizzed? wiped? something isn't right and the photos are hiding things

There is some confusion here regarding the term "trial strike."

A very few 1922 Peace dollars were struck in high relief using the 1921 hubs. 35.4k were struck, most business strikes, with a handful of Proofs. Almost all were melted, including all but one of the business strikes (unique.) The sole business strike survivor was quite circulated when it was finally discovered (low VF.)

Of the Proofs, they were Matte Finish and Sandblasted finish. Less than 50 of those Proofs are known to survive.

The design was then modified slightly (Modified High Relief) due to constant premature die failures and strikes were done with the new dies. 3,200 coins were struck using the modified dies including 1 Satin Proof and 1 Sandblasted Proof. 3 of the business strikes survive, including the specially marked "3200" coin given to Director Baker, for a total of 5 survivors (3 business strikes + 2 proofs.)

I think OP means that they think this coin may be one of the 1922 High Relief or Modified High Relief business strikes, but that would require verification by NGC or PCGS - if it were, in fact, a newly discovered example of either type, it would be worth a great deal of money.

OK, I think I threw you all for a loop. I assumed those in the know would be familiar with this coin. By everyone's response to "trial strike" I believe everyone went off in the wrong direction that I did not intend....I'm sorry.

I'm talking about the 1922 Low profile "trial strike".

All 1922 low relief Peace dollars were produced from two different pairs of hubs. The first 200,000ish minted were pre-production "Trial Strikes" with this hub #1

2/13/1922 100,000 minted
2/14/1922 100,000 minted
2/15/1922 150,000 minted

Once approved on 2/14/1922, Working dies were made from this "Trial strike" hub #1 which they also used for the low profile proofs. Then in March the mint made the second hub #2 which dies were made from after that.

This coin pictured is what I believe to be from hub#1..the same hub used to make the original 200,000 low profile "trial strikes"

I was just looking for confirmation/thoughts that this is or is not from Hub #1 and a grade. Coins from this hub are more elusive...but available.

Thanks
Dan
