Can someone enlighten me as to why almost all the 97 D Kennedys I see could probably be considered Mint State? They look so much better than all the other dates I find roll hunting. They shine with luster and detail and stand out. They look so good I just want to keep them all!

I notice that as well. Some of the 1996D are like that too.

I'm not seeing that with the P mint. Why do you think the '97 D looks so much better than the P and other years? Do you think it may be that in 97 in Denver they were using new dies?

Don't they use new dies every year? I seem to recall that dies are not good for more then 1 million strikes.

If they do change dies that often, why do the 97 Ds look so much better while in circulation that everything else I see in a roll?

Dies can last for a few hundred thousand strikes so the 1997D run probably used 75-150 dies for a mintage of almost 20 million. As to why your Denvers look better than the Phillys, all I can say is that halves tend not to circulate much so they don't sustain much wear and that in recent years the Denver coins seem to be "nicer" in general than Phillys.

One possibility is becase in 1997 the Denver mint die shop went into full operation and they were making all their own dies. Before that Philadelphia made the dies for both mints. This means there could be differences in how the di were finished, or in previous years the Denver dies could have been hubbed from working hubs which were not replaced as often, etc. It's like the earl S mint morgans. All the dies came from Philadelphia, but they were polished differently and replaced more frequently at the S mint resulting in a lot more high luster PL type coins.

I just finished going through a bunch of Kennedys, and I had a lot of 1999D that looked UNC. My guess is that these things just don't circulate. I come across a number that are really beaten up and have no reeding left on the edge - casino usage I guess, and then those that are just in great shape. I believe other memebers have said that a lot of casinos stopped using the half dollars.
