Acquired-Today:-Fr.-1910-1977-A-$1-FRN-DC-Cope-Natick-In-VF-Grade-E-786-06512-H---Not-Seen-Before

Fr. 1910 1977-A $1 FRN DC COPE Natick in VF grade

E 786 06512 H - run 62 - pp F2 - fp F2099 - bp 3127

afaik this brings the Natick non-error census from 13+1 to 14+1 notes (regular+star)

also, afaik this marks the lowest Natick serial number so far... though still not run 61

the fp/bp combo does align as expected with the many known Natick overprint errors

Welcome to the CCF.
The Natick notes have always been shrouded in mystery to me. I owned the an example of the popular error note, with the 3rd printing on the back, but have yet to hear a detailed explanation of what exactly happened at Natick or what makes these special.

I have no clue what a Natick note is or why this is special.

A Natick banknote is a test paper note that is printed on Natick Labs paper.
The serial number range of the note indicates that it is a Natick test paper note.
For example, a note with an overprint on the back without any indication of being Natick paper is a Natick test paper note

All of the above is well documented.
What I'd like to know is, what exactly is Natick Test Paper and what differentiates it from normal, Crane security paper ? What were they testing for ? Is it actually Natick paper or a coating or chemicals applied to Crane paper ? What were the results of the test ?

I've got more questions, but I'll start here.

An update.

I re-requested FOIA 2017-09-183 from the Treasury Department - Vernon's prior request re Natick.

The response includes a page from "The Standard Handbook of Modern United States Paper Money" which cites the 3 known serial number ranges, plus 42 pages comprised of a Memorandum on 13 possible counterfeit deterrents.

Said 1979 Memorandum describes the Natick experiment:
