PCGS - The Bay Bridge commemorative half dollars were minted to commemorate the opening of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. These coins were sold at the drive-up booths at the bridge, making them one of the Hobby's only "drive-through" commemorative.

When my collecting habit resumed in 2023, this was the first graded coin [ NGC AU58 ] I acquired. It remains my favorite classic commemorative

It's quite impressive in person too! The designer (Jacques Schnier) captured the ferry building well on the reverse. I can just imagine walking along the Embarcadero in the chilly San Franciso air and wandering into the Ferry Building for a latte.

I might have to get this one. I lived on Treasure Island for about 2 years and drove across both sides of the Oakland Bay bridge before the Oakland side was re-designed. I was there during the time of the '89 earthquake that took down many of the roadways.

Cool... Whenever I have driven by I've wondered if people actually live on the island or if it was a military installation or whatnot.

Very nice example! Very clean! I wonder what kept it from being graded MS-69?

For a bit more about the bridge and its opening, see:

Oh, my, that's an absolutely stunning example! I'm looking to upgrade my Bay Bridge commemorative, but I'll have to be content with an attractive MS67 .
