Hi there,
I was hoping for some help identifying some objects if that is OK?

I have inherited a few ancient coins and things from a family member and I am slowly rolling through them identifying them and learning as I am going, and I think I am doing OK. Most are fairly 'standard/common' ancient coins by the looks but a couple are things I can't for the life of me identify.

One is certainly a coin, which looks to have a Theodosius M, surrounded but a Palm tree left, a Palm leaf right and a stick figure-ish (?) star crest above. Terrifyingly the only thing I can find online that matches that combo is referred to as Sears 1496, which is a) rare and b) hilariously unlikely... The reverse is just crusty nothingness so that is no help.

The other is a medallion I think, with some lettering indented around the outside, but what looks to be mostly indented scrolls or swirls. However, the centre seems to have some gold attached to it. The reverse is plain however might, miiiight have had an S shape as the first of perhaps 3 letters across the centre... if you squint, with the right light.

Any one have any ideas? I'm very new to this so I have no idea...
Cheers
Ter

on your identification of the first coin - SB 1496, Theodosius III (715-7), Syracuse mint.
(There's a bunch of very similar early 8th century Syracuse mint issues that are only distinguishable by monograms; on this one the monogram matches Theodosius III best, but there might be other options not on Wildwinds. As far as I can tell, the M flanked by palm fronds is probably unique to this series.)

I don't think the second item is either ancient or a coin; I'd guess some kind of button, maybe 18th or 19th century.

Second, yes that is totally fine but please in the future list each object in a separate thread. That way we can give them all the individual attention that they deserve. Finally, I agree that the second object most likely is an old button, but hard to know for sure.
