I recently purchased 175$ of change from a bartender friend of mine. The first thing I noticed was a Presidential dollar coin. I picked it up and immediately noticed the edge was "plain." The 2009 Red Book states that these should weigh 8.11 grams. When I weighed it my scales said 7.99 grams. I also weighed some other president coins I have and some were even weighing less on my scales! I didn't have a single one out of 10 or so weigh out at 8.1 grams. The heaviest one was 8.00 grams. I tared my scales as well. The diameter of the coin seemed to be the same as the normal ones. So I am beginning to think I might have an actual plain edge 2007 George Washington.
Is there anything I could look for specifically to spot a fake? I inspected the edge with my 10x and didn't see any signs of sanding. I haven't bothered with pictures yet, if they are needed I can take some. Just waiting for your expert opinions first.
Most likely if there's no sign of sanding (or any scruffs) along the edge then it should be genuine. Anyways, there were a lot of "godless" GWs, then less Adams, then even less Jeffersons, and less on the presidents onward.
But, we have a member here that found a smooth 2009 Sac.
When the blanks were cut the 'layers' of metal sheared causing the border between them to zig-zag. Inside the planchet, however, the borders are perfectly straight. Look for that, because it's the #1 way to immediately spot an alteration.
