The Close AM is not the "good" one. You should be looking for the Wide AM on the 1998 cent.. Sorry

The Wide AM is the one to look for. Close AM is normal on all 1998, 1999, and 2000 cents. It's a spender. https://www.lincolncentresource.com/wideams.html

Yes, you are correct - this is a Close AM. There are 3 ways to determine WAM and CAM coins
1. the obvious one - is that the A in America is close to the M in America for a CAM
2. The 'A' between the 2 'T's in States in not centered for a CAM
3. the FG initials Are far away from the memorial for a CAM

and just the opposite is true for a WAM cent.

Now if you click on the hot link on any of the CAM - WAM - Close AM - or Wide AM, you will be brought to a page that documents everything you need to look for.

edit - Huh, apparently the hot link was taken away from the CAM abbreviation - probably due to other words using that letter sequence....
