Hi All. This is my reason for joining this community. I inherited this set of 50 Albrecht Durer medallions. I was told my grandmother bought them 2 at a time monthly around 1978 from German Reader's Digest along with the wooden box. I can't find them mentioned anywhere in Google searches, apart from the same carved box in worse condition and empty on ebay for the silly asking price of $650. Any info appreciated. Worth anything much? Maybe very few people ended up collecting the whole set. Or should I just put them on display in a cabinet to remember my grandmother?     |

A set of these was sold at auction in Germany in 2017 for €450. See: https://www.lotsearch.de/lot/silber...rke-39028852The medals are 20 grams each (confirmed by other listings) and sterling (.925) silver, so the total weight should be 50x20 = 1000 grams (the auction site states 677,1 grams!). With silver spot at about 30.3 USD the actual silver value is 0,925 x 1000/31,1 = $ 901 |

Thanks for the information, Eligius. I didn't have the paperwork for the sterling silver.
They're nice enough to display in a glass cabinet. If I get robbed they'd get melted down for the silver rather than be sold to a Durer collector.

It is normal for modern silver medals to be sold by weight. Large runs, not yet historical, so many to choose from.
Keep them or take advantage of the high silver price to sell. But do not expect collector's premium on these medals.

The set was made by Franklin Mint so if you google that you may have some luck.

Sterling silver franklin mint product. This is a silver spot price set, these don't typically sell well and get melted a lot.

I just bought a new house and have a place to display these medallions now. Since the set is basically worth its weight in silver minus the buyer's percentage, and noticing the spots and fingerprints on some of them, I think I'll polish them up for display. A link to my German ancestry.

I do not recommend polishing them, but if you must, a quick dip in eZest coin cleaner and a rinse in 100% pure acetone is what I would do. But I would really just leave it as is. John1  |
