Here is a photo of the 1987-D cent I found. I suspect the mint mark is lower on the coin, also I tried to upload a picture of a regular 1987-D cent, but it said the file was too large.

That is a low placement for a mint mark, but I believe it fits into regular mint tolerance's.

Mint marks were hand punched into individual working dies until 1990.

Given the billions of coins produced every year - and the need for thousands of working dies - this resulted in what you would expect, a wide range of mint mark positions.

Your 1987-D cent is an example of this hand punched variability.

Sure, it's lower than most mint mark locations of that era - but within expected location tolerances and there is nothing about it that brings your cent a numismatic premium.

Save it as a curiosity if you like it.

Do a better job of cropping the unneeded and distracting background in the photo.

The large striped wood surface takes up more than 50% of the image you show and adds nothing of value to the discussion.

Thank you everyone for your answers, and sorry about my wooden desk in the background, I am not good with pictures.

@ tencent: you have been here since 2018 - I would think that you would know better and to make sure your images were properly cropped..

However, that said, the MM is in the usual expected location (under the date)

Mint marks used to be punched in by hand, so mint mark positions varied.
