Jefferson nickel, 1941 Large-S variety. This coin is an ebay purchase that arrived today. The initial discussion from the seller's pics can be found here. The seller's pics were much darker and smoother than my own.

With the coin in-hand, I have some concerns about those patches above the two sides of Monticello. Initially, I thought that it was simple PIDT, which is very common on nickels of this era. Now, I am not so sure. Is that toning or something else? It almost looks like someone treated the spots with Verdicare or another cleaner. A different possibility is a polished out die clash. There are many die scratches evident on this coin, so it is probably LDS.

One note: that brown spot on the obverse bottom is something on the axial box glass. I didn't want to risk sticking a Q-tip in there and possibly scratching the glass.

Your photos don't do a very good job showing the luster. Can you post more photos with less lighting?

Appears to have a 71 year orbit. We'll have to look for it again in our 2093 coins.

After some additional investigation, those two spots are apparently a common location for unusual toning patterns. It seems to happen when the die surface has become uneven from PIDT starting. I would hazard a guess to say that the metal fatigue patterns expose more surface area to the air and moisture than a perfectly flat coin surface.

there are very few instances where we need an angle view of a coin. it tends to hide all kind of surface problems. I think your original photos are good enough to assess by.

there is definitely some heavy die polishing going on. the obv is telling me a few things. the coin looks circulated. I reviewed the 3 PCGS coins you listed and can see what you are talking about. without them I would have called the coin cleaned however PCGS 26348617 really shows similar markings just more prominent. the discoloration on both sides can be from being circulated and/or storage.

after looking at your examples I think the coin probably grades straight. however you must consider that if this coin was submitted would the grader know this. I'm at AU53/55

Hm. I thought angled images were useful in examining the surface. I will stick to perpendicular photos, then. As to the grading, I suppose there is always a risk that the grader doesn't know the quirks of any given coinage. But PCGS did straight grade similar coins.

I appreciate the help, guys. I've decided to keep the coin. It's in overall good condition, and I believe it's a new working die example for my collection. If I ever get it graded, I will share the results on CCF.

Looking MS to me & I liked the angled views.
They showed much more detail, like luster and the slightly raised effect caused by die wear.
Words of encouragement are one of the major food groups.
We need to consume them regularly to thrive and grow.
