Today I received my first Jovita Idar quarter in change. Concept: Real life: My initial reactions: 1) I like the empty cameo fields on the reverse; 2) The main reverse design is EXECRABLE. The lettering and words on her torso are completely illegible. I literally had to pick up a magnifying glass to try to read them, and even then they were so tiny and pushed together it was still a chore to make sense of them. Her name was well hidden. And for a while I couldn't even find where the denomination was. I was ready to call the mint and let them know that because "quarter dollar" or "25 cents" were nowhere to be seen, they had minted 379 million slugs. But--ah, there it is!--a tiny "quarter dollar" showed up under extreme magnification. If anybody doesn't know who she is (like me), they will remain ignorant because her name is hidden amidst all the other illegible text. And all her accomplishments have met a similar fate. If the mint was going to honor her, why didn't they do so so people could at least read her name? I think this is an example of not considering how the sculptor's large clay versions were going to look when they went to miniature. I can just picture it: The mint officials, complete with their white handlebar mustaches, tuxedos and ever-present cigars hanging from their lips, take a look and say, "Hello! Kind of... funky, offbeat... we like it. We want people to think we're cool and not just a bunch of old fuddy-duddies. We want to be thought of as PROGRESSIVE! We're no longer the mint of Victor D. Brenner! Say goodbye to Felix Schlag! We want to be modern! So... let's run with it!!!" The sound of boisterous laughter, back-clapping and champagne bottles popping ensued, while checks to the sculptor were signed mit glee. (Unfortunately nobody thought to think about how it was going to look being held in the palm of John Q. Public.) Here is a previous post concerning this calamity: http://goccf.com/t/451384&whichpage...chTerms=idarSo, ahem, Harrumph, and in conclusion, BARF! Edited by jpsned 06/05/2024 7:30 pm

Glad your're not the one making the decision on coins as I think it's the best design of the series.

I like the design, but the fact that I can't read any of the words makes me wonder why the mint minted it.

Have to concur, cannot read this in hand, and that cannot be considered a success.

I believe that the current generation of themed quarters—possibly including states quarters—are designed for how they will look as proofs. Not much thought has gone into the idea that quarters take a lot of circulation punishment in vending machines and cash registers, and all the tiny text and devices will be mangled by circulation damage in short order. They are designed for panache first, functionality second.

If the text is illegible how can you say it's a good design? Doesn't that by definition make it a bad design?

I agree it's a hideous design. Somehow, despite dealing with coins every day in my daily life, the newest quarters I've come across are Eleanor Roosevelt, so I'm feeling kind of lucky not to have seen one of these in my change yet, but I'm sure I will in due time. I forget - what year are these quarters?
But I do like them - very different from the usual. as for reading the words - have you tried to make out the date and mint mark on the innovation dollars yet?

This does not bother me. I cannot read the dates on dimes without a loupe and can barely read them on the cents with my glasses on. Difficult to read coinage is a fact of life for me now. For the record, I like this design and yes, the proof versions are gorgeous to me.

Those silver proofs are beautiful. The circulation coins, not so much.

I like this design. I had to send a message to an ebay seller who thought the mint 'forgot to add the letters' on this coin. He wanted $2000 for the error.
ANA ID: 3203813 - CONECA ID: N-5637 Clean a coin that may be worth collecting? Please DON'T! When in doubt, leave it dirty!!
